Four fire engines have been sent to a "well alight" two-storey building in St Albans.

The incident occurred at around 4.06am this morning (Wednesday, January 11), at the junction between London Road and Drakes Drive.

At that time, a "large fire" was taking place at a derelict building.

Fire engines from St Albans, Garston and Hatfield fire stations were sent to the scene.

The fire had been extinguished by 6.45am, and an investigation into the cause of the blaze has been launched.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service commented: "Firefighters used the main hoses from the fire engines to tackle the fire from multiple directions, including cutting into the loft space as the fire had spread to the roof.

"The fire was out by 6.45am, and crews remained to damp down the scene until 8am when the scene was handed over to the police. Nobody was hurt.

"An investigation into the cause of the fire will take place today."

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire police said at the time: "Motorists are being advised to avoid the area around London Road in St Albans this morning, following a large fire at a derelict property.

"The fire service are currently in attendance and the road is closed at the junction with Drakes Drive. Please use alternative routes where possible."
