A bus, described as "well alight", has been evacuated after catching fire in St Albans.

At around 7.35am yesterday, the Arriva 321 bus caught fire on Harpenden Road as it headed for the city centre.

Two fire engines from St Albans Fire Station were sent to the scene, where crews ensured that the vehicle had been evacuated before tackling the blaze with three hose reels.

The fire was extinguished by 8am, with one passenger claiming that the road was closed for around an hour.

A spokesperson for Hertfordshire Fire & Rescue Service said: "Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service was called at 7.35am yesterday morning (Monday, December 11) to reports of a bus on fire on Harpenden Road, St Albans.
