Work to improve walking and cycling provisions in St Albans city centre is now under way.

Plans to boost pedestrian travel will see work carried out on Upper Marlborough Road, Marlborough Road and at the junction of Marlborough Road and London Road.

The plans will involve the introduction of a cycle cut through on Upper Marlborough Road, a southbound cycle lane on Marlborough Road and safer crossing points at the junction of London Road and Marlborough Road

Work begins today (June 24) and is expected to complete in September.

It will be carried out between 9.30pm until 4pm during the week, and from 8am to 1pm on weekends.

Funding for the project has come from Active Travel England, a government agency which aims to promote walking and cycling across England.

Rupert Thacker, director of transport for Hertfordshire County Council, said: “Following on from developing a Local Cycling and Walking Improvement Plan (LCWIP) for St Albans and district, we are really pleased to have secured funding from central government and to be starting work on the delivery of these improvements to make walking and cycling easier in the city centre."

Works will be phased to minimise disruption to all road users, and we would like to thank anyone affected for their patience while the improvements are completed.”

The only expected road closures are expected to take place overnight, likely in late August.
