As auditions for the big chair go, Jon Meakes is putting on some show with St Albans City.
David Noble's departure to Wealdstone promoted his assistant and first-team coach into the dug-out at the National League South.
And after a 1-1 draw with runaway league leaders Yeovil Town, Saints have added two wins and a draw, all without conceding a game and scoring 10 in the process.
The latest success came at Clarence Park as they won 6-0 against Taunton Town but the caretaker was just talking about the game.
He said: "The score says it was dominant and from the first minute, once we got hold of the ball and moved it around, we saw that.
"We dominated from the first minute to the last.
"A fast start is how you establish yourself in the game. It puts the opposition on the back foot and we can get control.
"Even if they've set up differently, it give us a foothold.
"Going into half-time, the team talk was more around being sloppy in a few areas.
"It was maybe becoming too easy for us and we had to keep the standards up.
"It was pleasing to put them to the sword."
Shaun Jeffers kept his individual purple patch going with a hat-trick, taking him to 23 in all competitions for the season, and nine in the last eight league games.
"He was playing on the last man," said the boss. "He had to stay on the last man, even if they tried to squeeze him, and play in the 18-yard box.
"He did that and what he does is that he finishes well and he deserves his hat-trick."
Zane Banton, Ibby Akanbi and an own goal completed the victory that lifts them up to fifth.
But while the goals has suddenly transformed their goal difference, now plus-13, they have been backed up admirably by three clean sheets in the last three games.
The reason for that is very simple according to the caretaker.
He said: "If we've got the ball, they can't score.
"We had 75 percent possession on Tuesday against Hampton and that restricts the opposition.
"We gave away one chance through our own sloppiness [against Taunton] but apart from that, Michael Johnson has had nothing to do."
Attention now turns to a trip to the west country on Saturday and a game against Bath City, one place below them in the table but with two games in hand.
Meakes said: "We'll play and train at our tempo and I am expecting a tough game against Bath, it always is and they in that play-off places with us.
We're confident but we'll do our homework and if we carry on playing with the energy we have, we have quality through the squad."
