St Albans City beat Weston-super-Mare 2-0 with Jeffers double

His first at Weston-super-Mare came from the penalty spot in the first half, before a second deep into stoppage time at the end completed a 2-0 success.

It means, with eight game to go, Saints sit fifth, 16 points behind leaders Yeovil Town and the one automatic promotion spot but crucially, two points inside the post-season showdown spots.

City manager Jon Meakes was very happy with his side's efforts in Somerset.

He said: "I am exceptionally pleased with the squad. To prepare like they have from Saturday and then play on a pitch that wasn't bad to play on but soft and very heavy in places, they've worked extremely hard.

"Weston are a good team, we saw that in the first half, and it took 15 minutes to get to grips with them.

"They'll take points off a few of the top teams but I wouldn't say we made hard work of it.

"We could have taken a few more chances in the second half. We didn't do that and had to stay in the game but I thought we closed it out exceptionally well."

The victory was their second away win in a row following a 2-1 victory at Maidstone United on Saturday.

That just keeps the points ticking over which is all the boss wants for now.

He said: "It's all about momentum. We've just got to pick the points up and the games off as we go.

"We've only had one defeat this year and I said when we had that, could we go on another run.

"Here we are with four or five back to back results where we've not lost a game.

"If you get three points, it keeps you in the mix and we are well in the mix.

"We've got eight games to go and [for now] it's about putting distance between us and the team in eighth place.

"To get two wins from these two away games is incredible but we have to park that now.

"We'll train on Thursday and prepare for Truro [at home] and they are fighting for their lives.

"There are no easy games and we have to be spot on it."

He also had words for two of the elder statesmen of the squad, scorer Jeffers and the returning Kyran Wiltshire, who started for the first time this season.

"Shaun does what he does, he puts the ball in the back of the net," said Meakes.

"I could analyse his game further but he led the line well, kept asking the questions of their two centre-halves and when the chance came along, he took it.

"Obviously, he put the penalty away in the first place but he's there at the end to finish.

"Kyran, it was like he'd never been away.

"He gave us a little bit more experience, I wanted that in the holding area because of how I knew they'd play."
