Hertfordshire's Max Whitlock and Team GB have missed out on a medal in the gymnastic team event
Born and raised in Hemel Hempstead, the former Longdean School pupil had arrived at the Paris games with six Olympic medals already to his name.
And having qualified third, GB were hopeful of adding to their team bronze in London 2012.
The squad of Jake Jarman, Harry Hepworth, Luke Whitworth, Joe Fraser and Whitlock were always in the hunt too, but went into the last of six rotations a little less than four points behind USA in third, with Ukraine fourth.
They were on floor and scores of 14.700, 14.500 and 14.966 from Hepworth, Whitehouse and Jarman were enough for them to leapfrog Ukraine but only finish fourth.
Whitlock could still land another Olympic medal, going in the individual pommel horse final on Saturday.
And he produced the best score on the apparatus in this final.
The overall win went to Japan.
China look nailed on going into the final round but two falls off the horizontal high bar from Su Weide gifted Japan the gold.
USA took bronze.
