Boarders at St George’s School in Harpenden have raised £150 for the hurricane-stricken island of Barbuda by donating their tuck shop money to relief efforts.
The island, which sits on the east of the Caribbean, was left in pieces after Category 5 Hurricane Irma struck on September 6.
The hurricane left the island in turmoil, with 98 per cent of its infrastructure destroyed and people leaving the island with nothing more than the clothes they were wearing.
St George’s student Piers Anthony, who comes from the neighbouring island of Antigua, was the inspiration for the fundraising effort.
He said: “I’m sorry to have left my home country Antigua however, I am glad I am here at St George’s as we have raised more money than I ever could back in Antigua.”
Pupils donated their tuck shop money to the Antigua and Barbuda Search and Rescue and the Barbuda Relief Fund.
Headmistress Helen Barton said that the boys had displayed the true Georgian spirit of “service beyond self” and she was very proud of their fundraising efforts.
