"Absolute carnage" has been described at St Albans City train station amid a strike u-turn and M25 protests.

The incident began at around 9am this morning (Tuesday, November 8), when large crowds could be seen at the station.

Eyewitnesses have also reported that the station was closed temporarily due to overcrowding on the platforms.

Despite industrial action having been cancelled, disruption has still been caused and train services have begun later in the day.

Just Stop Oil protests on the M25 have also contributed, with fewer commuters travelling by car.

A spokesperson for Govia Thameslink Railway told this newspaper: "Unfortunately, as was publicised in advance, services started much later than usual today owing to the late-notice suspension by the RMT of their strike.

"St Albans City was very busy early this morning as a result and we introduced crowd management measures, holding people back in the concourse to prevent overcrowding on the platforms and ensure everyone's safety.

"We apologise to anyone affected.

"If your journey was delayed by 15 minutes or more then please claim Delay Repay compensation via the Southern or Thameslink websites."

St Albans MP Daisy Cooper took to the St Albans Commuter & Passenger Action Group on social media, and said: "I’ve seen everyone’s photos and videos of the chaos at St Albans station (thank you for posting):

"I’m just about to join the crush myself. I’ve spoken to a senior manager at Thameslink and they’re calling me back with details of what’s happening and why in the next 15 mins.

"I’ve been told that part of this is the result of strikes being cancelled late on Friday, it was difficult to change all the routes and drivers back again.

"But it does seem there are some other problems in our area so I’ll share that info when I have it. Please continue to share any updates."
