A holocaust survivor has visited a St Albans school to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

The day of remembrance takes place every year on January 27.

John Hajdu MBE visited Marlborough Science Academy, on Watling Street, on Monday (January 30).

During the visit, Mr Hajdu told Year 10 students of how he escaped Nazi occupied Hungary during World War II.

The holocaust survivor also spoke of how his father was taken to a forced labour camp in 1943.

John Hajdu's mother was also taken to Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria, just one year later.

At the age of seven he hid at a neighbours house with his aunt - an action which he now feels saved his life.

In February 1957, John arrived in England with his mother.

He has since married his wife Maureen, and has two children and three grandchildren.

John has also worked as a local magistrate and advisor to Haringey Borough Police Commander and the Metropolitan Police.

For the past 16 years, he has chaired his local residents’ association and become vice chairman of the North London branch of the University of the Third Age.

John Hajdu MBE has written a personal memoir 'Life in Two Countries', which is available to read and download on the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust's website (www.hmd.org.uk).
