Two men have been arrested on suspicion of shoplifting following an incident at Harpenden's Sainsbury's store.

About £100 worth of alcohol was taken from the High Street supermarket this morning (Wednesday, September 27), leading to the arrests at Harpenden train station at 10am.

A 35-year-old man from the town and a 45-year-old from Luton are currently in police custody.

The arrests were made by officers using new e-bikes.

Sergeant Mark Essam said: "We have done numerous area searches for high risk missing people using the e-bikes, as we’re able to get down the lanes and through parks – something which would take officers on foot hours to do.

"We have also been able to search areas the helicopter isn’t able to check, like woodland, and we have spoken to young people, especially in areas identified as anti-social behaviour ‘hotspots’.

“The public have been really positive about the bikes and we have been highly-visible but also able to cover much larger areas in one day."
