St Albans resident, Ian, has had his sight saved after a "routine" appointment discovered a condition that could have caused permanent sight loss.

The 82-year-old had been "going about his day-to-day life" when, three days before his opticians appointment, he noticed a change in his sight.

Ian put the change down to a dislodged contact lens, before learning from Specsavers that he had a detached retina.

Twenty-four hours later, Ian was recovering from surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital having had his sight saved by the procedure.

One month on from the operation, Ian has fully recovered and is back to playing golf and doing what he loves most.

He said: "Fate intervened with a routine appointment; I dread to think what would have happened to my vision if I hadn’t attended Specsavers that day.

"It’s likely I would have put up with the minor changes in my sight, and continued to blame my contact lenses and the consequences could have been extremely dire.

"The irony is, post-surgery, I have 20/20 vision once more.
