The Company of Teens is bringing a 'gripping and dynamic' wartime story to life at St Albans' Abbey Theatre.
The Machine Gunners, based on Robert Westall's Carnegie Medal-winning novel, centres around a group of resourceful children who stumble upon a crashed German bomber and repurpose its machine gun - playing their role in 'defending the country'.
Adapted for the stage by playwright Ali Taylor, the story explores the moral complexities faced by the young protagonists as they navigate the harsh realities of war.
Performances take place on the Abbey Theatre Main Stage at 8pm from Thursday, February 15 to Saturday, February 17.

Director Matt Hughes-Short said: "Every time we retell a story about war, we have a choice. We can repeat recurring themes and ideas, or challenge them, reframing the narrative from alternative perspectives.
"That’s what we are doing with The Machine Gunners through the acting of our extremely talented teenagers.
"Children can be vulnerable because their voices may not be heard or taken seriously in an adult world.
"We explore that through this compelling story, capturing the everyday authenticity and honesty of life as children during the Blitz."
