Labour have selected their candidate for the St Albans constituency at the upcoming general election.

Sophia Adams Bhatti was selected by party members yesterday (Wednesday, March 6) to contest the seat in the election, which must be held no later than January 2025.

She is expected to be up against Daisy Cooper, the Liberal Democrat MP for the constituency, and James Spencer, who was selected as the Conservative candidate last year.

Sophia, a mother of two, currently works as head of purpose and impact at Simmons and Simmons, an international law firm. Her previous jobs in the private and public sectors include working as a regulator in healthcare, immigration and financial services.

Sophia has lived in Bishop's Stortford since 1999, and stood unsuccessfully to be selected as Labour's parliamentary candidate for Hertford and Stortford earlier this year.

Speaking after her selection, Sophia said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been selected as Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for St Albans; it is a real honour.

“I have focused my entire career on building a fairer society for all and fighting for the rights of ordinary people. As a mum with a career and commuter I know how we need to improve services for working people.

“People in St Albans need a champion who will fight for change in Parliament. As our Labour candidate and MP, I promise to put the needs of our community first."

At the last general election in December 2019, Lib Dem Daisy Cooper won in St Albans with 28,867 votes, ahead of Conservative Anne Main (22,574), Labour's Rebecca Lury (5,000), the Green Party's Simon Grover (1,004) and independent candidate Jules Sherrington (154).
