Campaigners fighting proposals for a rail freight terminal on Green Belt land near St Albans have produced a film to raise awareness of the issue.

'Fight the Freight: The Movie' has been created by Save St Albans: Fight the Freight and is set to receive official certification this week, before going on to show at The Odyssey cinema.

The short movie has been produced by local filmmaker Kevin Gardam and includes interviews with campaigners, experts and residents who talk about the potential impact on local traffic, the environment and on people who live alongside the site.

Cllr Terrie Smith, one of the group's leaders, said: "We wanted to do something to help local people visualise the scale of the proposed development.

"By using a drone to fly over the area we can show exactly how much valuable green belt land will be lost, and by using computer generated images we can accurately show the size of the warehouses that have been proposed - one of which would be the size of terminal five at Heathrow Airport.

"The development will have a devastating effect on everyone living in this area. We are fighting to safeguard the future of this lovely historic city, for now and for future generations."

Hertfordshire County Council's sale of the former Radlett Airfield land set to be used for the development will be reviewed at High Court on June 11.

A judge will be asked to grant permission for a judicial review to go ahead at a hearing. If permission is granted, the review will follow immediately – on the same day.

Cllr Nuala Webb, co-leader of the Fight the Freight campaign, added: "We believe Hertfordshire County Council acted unlawfully in selling the 300 acres of green belt for development because they bought the land as permanent open space for the benefit of the local community."

In response to an enquiry about the impending hearing, a spokesperson for Hertfordshire County Council said: “We continue to be confident that the sale of the land in Radlett to Segro for use as a strategic fright rail interchange was undertaken in accordance with all due processes.”
