Ed Sheeran made a shock visit to London Colney's Sainsbury's store today (August 13) to promote his hot sauce brand, Tingly Ted's. Our reporter, Huw Richards, was at the scene on a special day for fans.
Last night via his Instagram account @TeddysPhotos, Ed Sheeran teased fans of a Tingley Ted hot sauce pop-up in the AL2 postcode.
On only my second day on the job, I was prepared for a run of the mill Tuesday, which was politely disrupted by the reveal of the official location, Sainsbury’s London Colney.
Arriving earlier than the star’s expected 11am arrival, I was able to speak to the other diehard Ed Sheeran fans that had made the journey to meet him.
Some had travelled up to four hours to meet their idol from across the country, with one fan named Felix making the trip from Germany.
Ipswich tops, time off work, and £90 ubers. All was deemed worth it for those superfans wanting a picture or a signature from the Halifax-born hitmaker.
As a music fan, I cannot say I have ever gone that far, but I was in amongst the hardcore, who were speculating about Sheeran’s movements, and tracking his security guards and photographer.
Some extra networking allowed me to pick up some inside information, lining up at the inside pop-up to hopefully grab a selfie with the ‘Shape of You’ singer.
Pandemonium insured, after a half an hour wait in the queue, Sainsbury’s shoppers were greeted by Sheeran over the store tannoy. This was my chance to meet one of the most famous people on the planet at Colney Fields Shopping Park.
He seemed rather bemused, amongst the parents and children was me, all suited and booted trying some hot sauce in the middle of the working day.
Despite this, I asked him to say hello to Herts Ad readers and provide one reason why they should buy Tingly Ted’s to which he responded: “It’s the best sauce on the market, that’s why.” Unsurprisingly I was hurried away before he could give us a video shoutout.
Nevertheless, I got my selfie, told him to ‘take care’, of all the things to say, and joined the crowds outside waiting for a slice of pizza. I have to say he seemed very nice from our short interaction and everyone I had spoken to echoed this - highlighting his ‘down to earth’ manner.
Although chaotic, it was a pleasant pop-up, all the fans were respectful and ensured everyone was safe, particularly in the 25-degree heat.
The hot sauce signing continued outside with fans bringing an assortment of food items along with them. Including, a melon, Quiche Lorraine and a broccoli. Unfortunately, I was unprepared and was not going to make him sign my tuna and sweetcorn sandwich.
As the event ended, there were some unlucky fans who did not get to meet the artist, but all were pleased with the Tingly Ted’s sauce, and they certainly gained one new customer.
