A consultation has been launched to get St Albans residents' views on how to improve the route between the train station and the city centre.

The district and county council's are seeking feedback on how to get the most out of Victoria Street.

It forms the main walking route between the station and city centre, as well as a wide range of shops, cafés, pubs.

The six-week consultation was opened yesterday (October 1) and will close on November 12.

Authorities intend to make improvements to the street that they hope will "create a more sustainable, safe, and vibrant street that enhances the safety and quality of life for the whole community".

Rupert Thracker, director of transport for Hertfordshire County Council, said:  "This project represents an exciting opportunity for St Albans residents to be involved and help shape future plans for Victoria Street right from the start.

"Our aim is to offer all residents a cleaner, greener, healthier Hertfordshire. Your input through this survey will help us understand what people like already and where there are areas that need to be improved, to make this important street a safe and sustainable place to live, travel, and access services."

No plans have been submitted yet, with the consultation designed to gauge pubic opinion.

Suggestions for possible improvements include more trees and planting, new places to sit, improved signage and wayfinding, artwork and storytelling features, wider pavements, protected cycle lanes, cycle parking, better bus stops and accessibility measures.

Chris Traill, strategic director for community and place delivery for St Albans City and District Council, said: "We are really excited about this project to enhance one of the best-known streets in St Albans and urge residents to get involved.

"This is a fabulous opportunity for people to put forward their own ideas about how their neighbourhood can be improved. We’re asking them to look into the future and let us know how Victoria Street should evolve."
