Verulam Cycling Club are hoping to see yet more stars of the future tackle a circuit race in Redbourn - as Fete du Velo makes a return in July.

The event, this year to be held on Sunday, July 7, has previously seen the likes of Trinity Racing's Will Smith and Anna Henderson, now of Belgian giants Team Visma–Lease a Bike, reach the podium in their early careers.

Smith was once part of Verulam CC's racing and development arm, Verulam Reallymoving, and they are keen to continue their success in sending young Hertfordshire stars into the professional scene, with Redbourn seen as a good proving ground.

Another who has tasted success around Redbourn Common, Beth Watson, has been invited to join Team Jadan Vive le Velo Glasdon, a natural next step for her in competing nationally in a women’s cycling team.

Fete du Velo also serves as an an opportunity for others to come and talk to the club, and see if they want to get involved.

The current crop of Verulam Reallymoving stars have had plenty of successes in recent weeks and months.

Emma and Alarik Knox have both been at the forefront of national mountain bike racing this year with Alarik the current U16 central region cyclo-cross champion.

His switch to mountain bike has not stopped his trips to the podium, especially in the British Cycling 2024 National Cross Country Series.

Emma meanwhile has picked up mountain bike podiums and wins in Basingstoke and the New Forest, all after her cyclo-cross season was ended early by injury.

George Rice is another up-coming Verulam Reallymoving talent, winning his first mountain bike race at U11 at the Gorrick XC MTB.

And sticking with MTB racing, Alan Gunner was back on the podium as he finished second in his race at the Kirroughtree MTB Nationals in Scotland.

Masters racer Paul Caton took the win on his mountain bike in the combined Eastern and South East Division Championship at Hog Hill.

Across in time-trialling, teenager Benjamin Cousins continues to shine at a national level, taking the junior win in the National Road Bike Championship in Peterborough in April, finishing more than four minutes ahead of his nearest rival.

Mike Debney has been another regular time trial winner in the men’s road bike category too.

In actual road racing, Matt Wight has been showing his strength with podiums at MK Bowl and Hillingdon, while Samuel Stacey took third in the U16s in the final round of the Youth Spring Series.

Cormac Bryce was second in a category A race at the British Master's Cycle Racing national championships, also winning the King of the Mountains jersey in the BMCR Tour of Abberleys.

Great teamwork from Chris Burns and Steve Dunn has led to the former winning two rounds of the Full Gas Summer Circuit Series at Lee Valley.

And at a well-attended Track League meeting in Welwyn Garden City, the Verulam Reallymoving team posted yet more great results.

Rice took the win in the handicap race, as well as third in the scratch race, the same position Dale Jetmar managed in the win-out category.

Matt Davey, in his first meeting of the year, was third in the hare and hounds race while Stacey was dominant in the Youth One category, winning the scratch, reverse win-out and elimination races.
