Bowls clubs continued their assault on different titles across national, county and district competitions.

Batchwood Hall have a number advancing to the later stages.

Lesley Tutt won 21-18 against Helen McMillan of Bushey to reach the quarter-finals of the women’s senior singles and she is also through to the same stage of the senior pairs, along with Jackie Bell.

They beat Batchwood team-mates Jenny Gauthier and Brenda Bennitt 14-9.

Another from Batchwood, Yvonne McAuliffe, and partner Anne-Marie Stuart-Reid of Townsend, are already through to the last eight.

McAuliffe is another quarter-final too, the mixed pairs with Batchwood's David Richardson, after a 21-13 success over a duo from Welwyn & District and Hatfield.

Jackie Bell and Harpenden's Steve Maynard also defeated Welwyn & District 19-11 to advance.

Batchwood's men did fall to defeat against W&D though in the National Top Club competition.

In the Tony Allcock mixed fours, Batchwood's team, spearheaded by skips Mark Trembling and Sue Swain, beat Potters Bar 36-21 and Tring 33-22 to reach the semi-final.

In the district's Bob Vise Trophy, there was a 70-41 win over Harperbury while in the Ladies County League, Potters Bar were beaten 29-23 after one rink win each from the two played.

There was also a 38-20 win over Harpenden in the ladies' district league.

St Albans' ladies played their area semi final of the National Top Club competition but despite reaching halfway level at two disciplines each, Croxley Guild pulled ahead in the second half to leave Saints with just the pairs to show in a 3-1 loss.

The club did win their two mixed triples weekend fixtures though.

Playing Hitchin at home on Saturday, the top rink included Ian Woodcock and Brenda Pitkin whose 29-9 win was crucial in an overall 79-72 success.

One day later a trip to Harpenden brought a more comfortable 75-48 victory, St Albans winning on two and drawing one of the four played.

Townsend had their successes too.

In the County Pairs, Peter Thomson and Alan Charran beat a team from Harpenden 18-8 while they too had a Bob Vise Trophy match, their's against Welwyn Garden City.

The contest began in drizzle but ended in warm sunshine, however, the sun was smiling on the visitors who edged the game after the four disciplines were shared equally.

Les Perkins and Gordon Williamson won the pairs while the fours of Bob Lawrie, Andy Scarborough, Peter Armstrong and Matt Pope also delivered the goods.

The weekend friendly at Shire Park (Tewin) saw Townsend beaten 66-65, despite the efforts of Richard Morgan, Alan Charran and Roger Potter who were the top rink.
